FINDING GOD

So what's this God thing all about?

Maybe you've asked yourself that question in the past, or perhaps you're asking it now. At some point in our life we all tend to search for some sort of meaning and purpose: Why am I here? What is my life all about? Is this all there is?

People look for meaning and fulfillment in many different things. Some people look for meaning and fulfillment in their possessions or in money; some people look for meaning and fulfillment in their career or job; some people look for meaning and fulfillment in relationships or activities; and some people look for meaning and fulfillment in their appearance or status. And unfortunately, some people even turn to destructive habits or sinful lifestyle choices such as alcohol, drugs, immoral sex, pornography, or gambling to satisfy their longing for meaning and fulfillment or to try to cope with the problems in their life. But no matter where we might try to look for meaning or fulfillment, there is only one place where we can find true, life-long satisfaction, meaning, and significance in our lives: GOD!

You see, God created a void in all people, and that emptiness and longing can only be filled by our loving Creator God. You see, since the beginning, God created people to have a personal and loving relationship with Him. God longs to have a relationship with you, but God will never force you into a relationship. Because He loves us, God gives each one of us the freedom to choose to have this relationship.

Choosing to follow God is not about a bunch of rules and empty rituals. At times people get the impression that going to church or being a Christian is just about rules and religious rituals. But at the heart of being a Christian is a relationship. This relationship is with God first, and our relationship with God also affects our relationship with others.

Why do I need this relationship with God? While God wants to have a personal relationship with us, we naturally want to do things our own way instead of God's way. The Bible calls this sin. It doesn't matter if we have rebelled against God or simply ignored Him, it's all sin, and the problem with sin is that it creates a barrier between God and us. There is only one way to bridge this barrier and that is through Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that God sent his only son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that we could have a real and personal relationship with God leading to eternal life in Heaven after our physical death (John 3:16-18) and also new life to the full (John 10:10) here and now.

What must I do? Remember, God does not force us into a relationship with Him but He lovingly offers us a wonderful relationship with Him, but we must choose to receive that offer. So all you must do is choose to receive the gift of relationship that God has offered to you through His Son Jesus. Then, it simply comes down to working to live your life in such a way so that you will honor and build up your relationship with God.
